Join artists Emma Critchley, Feral Practice with Megan Broadmeadow, Hannah Fletcher, Lydia Halcrow, Jem Southam and curator Tim Martin to explore and discuss the themes and work that led to the creation of the current exhibition What Stories Make Worlds.

The exhibition title draws inspiration from Donna Haraway's words in her book ‘Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene’: “It matters what matters we use to think other matters with; it matters what stories we tell to tell other stories with; it matters what knots knot knots, what thoughts think thoughts, what descriptions describe descriptions, what ties tie ties. It matters what stories make worlds, what worlds make stories.”

The event will explore how this group of artists respond to our relationship with landscape and the environment at a time of climate change and biodiversity collapse. It will not only reflect on Haraway’s words but also on ideas around journeying to, along and within oceans, shorelines, estuaries, rivers, forests, hills and gardens.

Layers of Time: The Gardens of Hestercombe

Hestercombe is more than a garden — it is a landscape shaped by visionaries, caretakers and changing ideas across four centuries. This exhibition explores that story, from its early formal beginnings to the sweeping eighteenth-century landscape, the artistry of the Edwardian terraces, and the remarkable restoration that has brought them back to life. Through images and interpretation, discover how each generation has left its mark on this Somerset estate — creating a place where history, design and nature exist in layers, still unfolding today.
