Data Manager (p/t) | Parks & Gardens UK

Role summary

We are looking for a part-time Data Manager to assist the Parks and Gardens UK database project, now based at Hestercombe. This role is pivotal for parksandgardens.org: in enhancing the quality and integrity of data, increasing accessibility and functionality, and keeping forward momentum in the project. The project’s aims include, among others, raising awareness of the value of historic parks and gardens and providing accurate data on sites for planners, researchers and others engaged in garden heritage and conservation.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Checking and validating submitted data which will require researching missing or incomplete data using appropriate sources of information
  • Preparing digital copies of new site records for checking by garden history experts including County Gardens Trust surveyors
  • Accurate entering of data and images taken from written or other records into the Project database by means of the website data entry interface provided
  • Uploading news articles, events, images and other website content as required
  • Managing and developing the team of volunteers attached to the project to enter data and conduct user testing
  • Liaising with the website’s developers to provide feedback on functionality and resolution of any errors
  • Dealing with queries and enquiries received by telephone, email and letter
  • Providing regular reports for the Marketing Manager and Chief Executive of Hestercombe Gardens Trust.

Salary & Contract

Salary: £24,000 pro rata.

This role is initially offered on a short-term (3 month) contract of between 7.5 and 15 hours per week, with further extensions to both contract and weekly hours dependent on external funding already applied for. 

About the Parks and Gardens UK project

The Parks and Gardens UK database was established from 2005 to create a database resource of material relating to historic designed landscapes using technology to process and distribute information in order that it should be readily accessible.

Chef de Partie

Role summary

We’re looking for a passionate and talented chef to join our team in the kitchens.

This is a varied role in which you’ll be preparing dishes for the Stables Café, Column Room Restaurant, weddings and special events.  You’ll also play a part in devising our seasonally-changing menus.

You’ll be joining a close-knit, passionate and enthusiastic team in a beautiful location. A positive attitude and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are essential.

£18,000 – £21,000 per annum dependant on experience.

Kitchen Porter

Role summary

Full-time Hospitality Team Member

Role summary

We’re looking for someone with previous catering experience to join our expanding Hospitality team as a full-time member of staff.

This is no ordinary catering role. Working across our stunning heritage venue in the Stables Café, Column Room Restaurant and at weddings and events, there will be opportunities for your personal and career development. These could include undertaking food hygiene, licensing and first aid courses, along with the chance to learn about an incredibly diverse and exciting business, and eventually, the potential to progress into junior managerial roles within the Hospitality team.

You’ll be a joining a close-knit, passionate and enthusiastic team in a beautiful environment. A positive attitude and the ability to deliver exceptional customer service are essential.

Full-time role, 40 hours a week. £18,000 per annum. Full training provided. No split-shifts.

Part-time Hospitality Assistants

Role summary

We’re looking for friendly people to work in our two catering outlets – The Stables Cafe and Column Room Restaurant – and at weddings and special events. Some catering experience would be helpful but not essential as full training is provided. A positive attitude and the ability to deliver great customer service are essential. Part-time and full-time roles available, minimum two days a week (including weekends). National Living Wage.

Norwegian Translator – Voluntary

Role summary:

Are you fluent in spoken and written Norwegian and English?  Do you have experience of translating written information from Norwegian to English? If so, you might be just the person we are looking for.

We are seeking someone to translate a Norwegian book relating to the history of E. W. B. Portman’s fishing lodge, purchased 1891, near Øvre Ljøsne, in the Laerdal Municipality of southern Norway.

Hours to suit, including home working if preferred.

Book seller – Voluntary

Role summary:

Do you have online book selling experience?
Then we need you.
We are looking for an experienced book seller to join our team of back room volunteers in order to keep our growing inventory up to date. Hours to suit. Volunteer incentives include discounts and complimentary Hestercombe membership.

Gift Shop – Voluntary

As a volunteer in the gift shop, you will enjoy interacting with new people as you welcome visitors to the shop. The role will allow you to assist with customer service, stock replenishment, and housekeeping as well as merchandising and taking money at the till. Full training will be given.

Hours include: Thur, Fri, Sat & Sun afternoons.

Bookshop Assistants – Voluntary

From working selling books to visitors to doing the ‘behind the scences’ sorting there’s lots to be done in the bookshop. We have donations arriving every week that need sorting, pricing and cleaning before they can be put out for sale. And once they’re on the shelves there’s serving visitors and chatting to them about the books they like. We ask for a commitment of one morning or afternoon every two weeks. Gallery Invigilators – Voluntary

As a volunteer in this role, you will meet and greet visitors to the new Hestercombe House Gallery, helping them to get the most out of their visit. You will have information about each of the artworks in your section and will be working as part of a team. You will be responsible for safeguarding the paintings and guiding visitors through the different rooms of the ‘pop-up’ gallery.
