Events Manager

Events at Hestercombe House and Gardens have been steadily developing in complexity, capacity and flair. Yearly we produce a wide range of events such as plant fairs, family theatre, live music, nature and wildlife walks, children’s garden trails, arts and crafts workshops; alongside our established seasonal events such as the summer ‘Terrific Tuesdays’, the popular Christmas Market and a varied Christmas events programme.

We’re looking for someone who wants to join as a key member of the organisation, who can hit the ground running, and bring imagination, creativity and excellent production management to the role. You must have relevant events experience for this role – please read the Job Description carefully.

Salary: £24k

Terms of employment: Full time, permanent. 37.5 hours per week, but with flexibility to work extra hours, weekends and evenings when necessary.

Facilities Maintenance Assistant

Hestercombe Gardens has a large variety of historic and modern facilities that require looking after. This can range from lime plaster repairs to the fabric of the main house, resolving minor issues with our modern Bio-mass boilers, unblocking a drain or changing one of the hundreds of light bulbs we have. We also require a range of extensive Health & Safety checks to be undertaken regularly; such as wheel chair checks, Emergency Light checks and fire and security alarm tests. To help with this the Facilities Department is looking for a part time person to assist with planned and reactive maintenance across the Hestercombe site, initially for two days per week.

The ideal person will be a qualified multi-skilled tradesperson able to carry out multiple skills with a principle emphasis on carpentry, plumbing and electrical work and used to working with traditional materials. Ideally they will also be familiar with carrying out H&S checks such as emergency lighting. They should be able to work without supervision once they are familiar with the site, to normal H&S requirements, and also able to work with other contractors employed by Hestercombe. They will be expected to co-operate with and support all departments across the business, including our tenants. This would ideally suit someone who is looking for semi-retirement and is able to commit to two regular days per week.

Salary: hourly rate will be dependent on experience and qualifications.

Gardener – Formal Gardens,

Hospitality Assistants

Role summary

We’re looking for friendly people to work in our two catering outlets – The Stables Cafe and Column Room Restaurant – and at weddings and special events. Some catering experience would be helpful but not essential as full training is provided. A positive attitude and the ability to deliver great customer service are essential. Norwegian Translator – Voluntary

Role summary:

Are you fluent in spoken and written Norwegian and English?  Do you have experience of translating written information from Norwegian to English? If so, you might be just the person we are looking for.

We are seeking someone to translate a Norwegian book relating to the history of E. W. B. Portman’s fishing lodge, purchased 1891, near Øvre Ljøsne, in the Laerdal Municipality of southern Norway.

Gift Shop – Voluntary

As a volunteer in the gift shop, you will enjoy interacting with new people as you welcome visitors to the shop. The role will allow you to assist with customer service, stock replenishment, and housekeeping as well as merchandising and taking money at the till. Full training will be given.

Bookshop Assistants – Voluntary

From working selling books to visitors to doing the ‘behind the scences’ sorting there’s lots to be done in the bookshop. We have donations arriving every week that need sorting, pricing and cleaning before they can be put out for sale. And once they’re on the shelves there’s serving visitors and chatting to them about the books they like. We ask for a commitment of one morning or afternoon every two weeks. Gallery Invigilators – Voluntary

As a volunteer in this role, you will meet and greet visitors to the new Hestercombe House Gallery, helping them to get the most out of their visit. You will have information about each of the artworks in your section and will be working as part of a team. You will be responsible for safeguarding the paintings and guiding visitors through the different rooms of the ‘pop-up’ gallery.
